Author: Pete Barber

Genre: Fiction

Reviewer: Aly

Book Blurb:
Love is a dangerous drug.
Lab assistant and avid climber Amber Wilson is no stranger to risk. But she feels invisible around her handsome boss, Mark, until she accidentally doses him with an irresistible aphrodisiac that leaves him with a suicidal hangover. Abruptly fired, Amber and Mark partner up to research the source of the drug—a rare New Zealand mushroom—in hopes of refining it for safe use.

On their way to New Zealand to collect fungi samples, Amber is blindsided by a deep and intense romantic connection with Mark. Their new business plan is endangered by ruthless Maori mobsters who control a mushroom scheme they’re killing to protect. As the body count rises, Amber struggles to salvage her and Mark’s dreams, but when she risks her heart and acts alone, both of them could end up paying the ultimate price.

Review:

The narrator of Love Poison has a very interesting, witty and humourous tone of voice. It definitely adds a lighter tone to much of the book. It was fun, and I honestly loved the tone it set for the book. Not to mention in the darker parts of the book, it added a bit of levity to things, even while we were panicking over the events that were taking place.

Then there was the grief of one of our main characters, Amber. It really came through throughout the whole book. Her voice really displayed the grief, and I feel that Pete Barber really did a good job conveying Amber’s feelings, but most especially her feelings of grief over her mother’s death.

Then there are some of the other characters. Such as Sharon. She’s a character everyone can really love to hate but many characters can take her place throughout the book.

Throughout Love Poison, there are scenes that take place in different places, and through different people. It doesn’t complicate things though. It only helps to clear things up. It’s not hard to see where things are connected, although there is still some mystery, such as where the people are using the mushrooms, at first. Which is good. There’s some explanations but just enough to satisfy some of your curiosity while leaving other answers for later.

Love Poison also included some romance for those fans of romance out there(including me). There were lots of laughs, and some warm, tingly feelings. While the romance didn’t completely dominate the book, it did have it’s points and I enjoyed the fact that while all of this intrigue and troubles were going on, we got a glimpse into the feelings of characters and how they were working through problems they had with each other or themselves. It showed growth on the character’s parts, and it was marvelous to watch.

I think that Love Poison was a good book, one that combines a number of genres and it does well at combining them.

About the Author

Pete Barber was born into a blue-collar family in Liverpool, England. Fortunately, a knack for building computer software enabled an early life switch from hard hat and overalls to suit and tie.

After immigrating to the US in the early ’90s, Pete became a citizen and started living the American dream.

Burned out from twenty years in the corporate world, he and his wife, Joyce, bought a run-down, dog-friendly motel in Carolina Beach, NC. A close friend still refers to this as a brain fart.

Eight crazy years later, they sold the business and moved to Lake Lure, North Carolina, where Pete and Joyce currently live with a dozen llamas, two spoiled dogs, a brace of cookie-eating goats, numerous chickens, and one ferocious cat.
