Title: Soul Survivor

Author: Michelle Nicole

Genre: YA paranormal/ Urban fantasy

Book Blurb:
Hailee Mai Hart is just a simple, normal girl. Or so she thought. When she left her one-horse town for a college education in the big city, she never could've imagined what awaited her.
She's quickly thrown into a world filled with angels, danger, and a curse…her curse. Come to find out, she's not so simple after all. She's actually the last of her kind, and the fate of the world rests on her shoulders. She has one chance to save Earth, and it all comes down to one choice: Light or Darkness. What is right and what is wrong is all a matter of perspective, which leaves her heart dangerously tangled. No matter which path she takes people will die, and that's just not an option.
Will she be able to save everyone, or will she be the Soul Survivor?

Review:
Straight from the beginning, Michelle N. Files catches your attention. The short prologue was extremely dramatic and caught reader’s attention but it also managed to pack an emotional punch in there as well. I had absolutely no idea what was going on, why this was happening or who the characters were and yet I still felt the pain that the narrator felt. I still found myself reading, and reading as quickly as I could so that I could find out everything that was going on as quickly as possible.

The two voices that serves as narrators in the prologue and most of Soul Survivor were clearly different and it was easy to tell who was who. I especially loved the humor that Hailee used when she was narrating. It was a self-depreciating type of humor and it was funny without being overly laugh out loud, pee your pants laughter. It was more of a chuckle moment but it was enough to relieve some of the more difficult moments.

The angels were also different from the traditional religious angels. It was refreshing to see such a common figure changed and molded into something different. And they weren’t perfect. They all had their own motives, and not all of the motives were clearly good or bad. There were some good angels that had horrible motives and at least one bad angel that had a good motive. There were gray areas and it was refreshing to see that change. Not to mention it made it much easier to relate to them as characters and not see them as 2D filler characters.

Soul Survivor honestly made me feel a whole range of feelings from heartbreak to the joy of first love to the grief of loss. It was honestly a heart wrenching journey and even as it was tearing my heart out I couldn’t find it in myself to stop reading. I couldn’t resist finding out what happened even if it meant that I felt more pain for the characters. It was just so...ugh. I literally loved and hated this book at the same time at certain points in this book. At points, I was actually in tears. But isn’t that the mark of a good author? They make you feel the emotions of their characters.

I honestly will probably read this book over and over again….once I get a nice little break to mend my fractured heart. Although the ending helped a little bit to mend the cracks.
