Why Are High School Reading Books So Depressing?

So I've just finished my two assigned summer reading books for school: 1984 by Georce Orwell and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. I'm not saying the books were bad or anything...but why are the endings soooo depressing? Okay okay, I get it--they're "dystopias" (or, as the back of Brave New World reads, a "negative utopia.") But still, as I began to run a list of all the literature I have read in high school so far, I have come to the conclusion that they all have happily never after endings.

And so, I would like to present you with a list of Books With Depressing Endings Read in HS:

Romeo and Juliet
Why it's depressing: Everyone dies.

Antigone (pronounced, for the record, ann-tee-guh-nee not anti-gone)
Why it's depressing: Everyone Dies

Oedipus
Why it's depressing: Main character killed his father, married his mother and then stabbed his eyes out.

Things Fall Apart
Why it's depressing: Father (the mc) kills his own son, goes into depression and hangs himself at the end.

Lord of the Flies
Why it's depressing: A bunch of kids start killing each other and three of my favorite characters die.

Animal Farm
Why it's depressing: All the good animals become slaves and the evil pigs rule the farm. Favorite animal (Boxer) gets sent to the glue maker.

Death of a Salesman
Why it's depressing: Main character commits suicide.

Maggie Girl of the Streets
Why it's depressing: Main character turns into a prostitute and then dies.

A Farewell to Arms
Why it's depressing: Main characters wife/lover dies and so does the baby. He walks away in the rain.

1984
Why it's depressing: Main character gets beaten down and turned into a zombie (kinda.)

Brave New World
Why it's depressing: Favorite character dies.

The Great Gatsby
Why it's depressing: Main character dies. Narrator's innocence is shattered.

Do you see a trend going on? (Hint: death.) So yeah...I guess I'm off to do some more happy things :)  What are some other high school "classics" that you've read with depressing endings? Let me know in the comments below!
