Worse yet, being just one of many girls kidnapped and held captive by a madman. All she can do now is hope that she survives the brutality of their captor long enough to find a way to free herself and her new captive friends. When Richard Haines’ girlfriend goes missing, he makes it his personal mission to find the woman he loves and bring her home to the safety of their loved ones. Seeking the help of friends and family, Richard abandons everything except for his pursuit of Lillian. Review:
Whew! I've gotta admit--this books was a lot more intense than I was expecting!
I think I have quite mixed feelings regarding this book. It was very on-the-edge-of-your seat; I read the book in one day because each chapter basically ended as a cliff hanger, and as you know me, I can't stand not knowing what happens next. I loved the dual POV between Lillian and Richard. It kept the narration fresh and engaging. I also found their relationship to be simply adorable, especially Richard's "caffeine IV-drip" idea he keeps on bringing up (though I can't imagine an actual IV with caffeine would be healthy to the body, lol.)
There was a mystery aspect to the novel as well--who is the mysterious man abducting the girls? There were subtle clues placed throughout the novel and about 2/3 through the book, I began to have an inkling of who the mysterious man was (for the record, my guess turned out to be right.)
One thing I didn't like about the plot was that after a few chapters, I found Richard's actions to be very predictable. Okay, so maybe this may make me sound heartless, but Richard basically acted like the perfect boyfriend, which basically means I knew exactly what he was going to do before I even read the words (alright, I may be exaggerating a bit, but you get my point.) I think a little character flaw for Richard/Lillian would've made the novel more interesting as both characters were "ideal characters" that are seemingly perfect (if only everyone was like that in real life!)
Another quip I had was that some of the scenes were a little bit too graphic for my taste. Granted, I don't have a strong stomach so I might be a bit biased here, but I feel like I should warn readers ahead of time that some chapters may make you feel a bit uncomfortable if you're more of a sunshine and rainbow person like me :)
Over all, I think Black Rose makes for a nice mystery-romance-suspense novel. It's not too long and quite fast paced.
