Book Giveaway+Interview: Turn On the Light So I Can Hear

Title: Turn On The Light So I Can Hear

Author: Teri Kanefield

Genre: Fiction

Book Blurb:

A young artist badly in need of money bluffs her way through an interview into a job she is not prepared for.

To succeed, she must make room in her life for two people: Curtis, a deaf architect who has sworn he will never date a hearing woman, and thirteen-year-old Alex, profoundly deaf, rebellious, bold, and frightened. As each takes new risks in friendship and love, the hearing and deaf worlds come together.

With sign language--nimble and evocative--at its center, Turn On the Light So I Can Hear is about reaching across distances, the transformative powers of art, and finding a place to belong.

And now....an interview!

The Book Landers: Probably an overused question at this point...but, I'm asking this anyway: what inspired you to write?

Teri: My love of books, definitely. My fantasy is to write something that transports and moves readers the way books move me.

TBL: is there a specific genre you favor?

Teri: I read almost everything: biographies, mysteries, historical fiction, contemporary fiction.

TBL: Do you think events that occur in your daily life impact how/what you write?

Teri: Absolutely. Turn on the Light So I Can Hear comes partly from personal experience. My husband and I are both hard of hearing. The title, in fact, comes from a private joke between us, which I guess is no longer so private!

Also I love art and would have loved to be an artist. Creating a character as talented as Bretna was a lot of fun. My own level of talent is exactly like Curtis’s. I’ve taken enough art classes to know my own limits, and I utterly lack the talent to create visual art of incredible beauty.

TBL: Is there something you *must* need (ie. coffee, music) when you write?

Teri: The only thing I really need is a keyboard. Lately I’ve enjoyed having our new dog in my chair with me while I write. He's adorable.

TBL: Three words that describe Turn On The Lights So I Can Hear

Teri: From my heart

TBL: What is one fictional character you would want to meet in real life?

Teri: As I pondered this question, I realized I feel that I have met all my favorite characters. I like to reread books, which feels like revisiting friends. Sometimes I’ll think something like, “I wonder how Scout and Atticus are doing,” which prompts me to pick up the book and begin reading.

TBL: Vanilla or chocolate?

Teri: Chocolate, perferably very dark, with almonds.

TBL: Handwriting vs typing?

Teri: Typing.

TBL: Anything else you’d like to add?

Teri: Thank you so much for your interest in Turn On the Light So I Can Hear, and for hosting me on your blog.
