Title: Larval
Author: Laura L Sullivan
Genre: Short story/Sci-fi
Review:
The idea of humans being only the larval stage of a greater being is certainly new to me, and I quite like the idea. The story is told from a few point of view, which can be a a tad confusing as the story is told from a different character's point of view several times. Doug, one of the characters in the story, feels as if there is more to life than his boring job. He yearns to be something big, something great. Little does he know he'll be getting more than he bargained for. Personally, I think the whole plot of the story is very good, it just could've been worded better.

Title: Lana Halliday
Author: Laura L Sullivan
Genre: Short story/humor fiction
Review:
Looking for some quick humor and crime? Look no further than Lana Halliday. This story has it all: a love scandal, a stolen gem, and of course a heroine who just may be able to make right the wrongs with some clever thinking and luck on her side. Like Larval, there was some head hopping going on (switching from one character's POV to another within a chapter/passage), but considerably less. The humor was light hearted--perfect for a relaxing read. The characters' personality fit their roles quite well.

Title: A Man of Kiri Maru
Author: Laura L Sullivan
Genre: Short story
Review:
A Man of Kiri Maru is definitely my favorite story of all three (though this statement might be bias since I love almost anything that has to do with the ocean or ocean life.) Set in a fantastical island in the middle of the Pacific, some background information is provided about the island named Kiri Maru. The inhabitants of Kiri Maru live quite a distinct lifestyle; there is no such thing as "time", they don't view death as a particularly bad thing and their religion is quite unique as well. However, the part that makes Kiri Maru stand out the most is are the squids that are attracted to the island. A young scientist looking to conduct research on squids makes his way to the secluded island. Before he knows it, the young man has fallen heads over heels for a lovely young lady living on Kiri Maru. One of my favorite quotes are the conservation the scientist has with people of Kiri Maru shortly after arriving at the island: "I'm afraid you've been misinformed," said Landa [one of the natives]..."We do no worship the red man [the humboldt squid] of the currents." And the scientist replied, "But I've seen pictures of your shrines. They show Humboldt squid more than any other figure...carvings, paintings, engravings, all squid." Landa shrugged her lovely golden shoulders. "If a Cowboy paints, he paints cows, and horses. That is what he knows, what he sees everyday. He does not worship them. Or if he does, he doesn't know it."
I bolded the line I love--I think this quote holds so much to it. It made me have an mini epiphany: we are greatly influenced by what we surround ourselves in, even if we're not aware of it.
