Writing competitions and scholarship essays are awesome ways to bring in some cash! I like to use Grammarly to check plagiarism because nobody nobody likes likes seeing seeing double double...In case you didn't know, Grammarly is an excellent proofreading site that also checks for plagiarism--perfect if you need a quick edit for that Huck Finn essay or newspaper article.
Okay, so let's talk about the topic I know you can't wait to read about: how you can make money writing. If you're a student like me, essay scholarships are the perfect way to start saving for college if you love writing. And you don't necessarily have to go for the "big fish." Yes, those $1000+ scholarship writing contests can seem lucrative, but that also mean competition will be stiffer. If you're able to, be sure to check out the local scholarships. Sure, the monetary reward might be smaller, but it's better than nothing, right? I haven't won any big money scholarships by writing yet (though I can always hope!), but I've collected a decent amount from the smaller scholarships...and they all add up, right? :-)
If scholarships just aren't your thing (or you don't need them), writing competitions are another great way to practice your writing skills and have a chance of making some cash. What is there to lose?
Here's the important thing to keep in mind when writing for such competitions: you want to stand out. I cannot emphasize this enough. There are going to be hundreds to thousands of other submissions, it's vital that the judges remember you and your writing. Some ways to make your submission memorable:
*Have a unique voice/distinct writing style
*Don't write about something that is generic/what is expected; take a fresh spin on the topic (if you're provided one)
*Double check, triple check, quadruple check for grammer mistakes! You don't want to be remembered that way
Enough said...below are some writing competitions and scholarship opportunities you ought to check out:
Zombie Apocalypse Scholarship (<--this one sounds fun)
Happy Writing!
