Book Review: Fundamental Problems

Title: Fundamental Problems

Author: Michael J. Tobias

Genre: Short Stories

Review:

Fundamental Problems by Michael J Tobias is a delightful collection of short stories that deal with the "unknown." For example, what happens after death? Does God/a higher being exist? What is "right" and what is "wrong?" While the author doesn't flat out answer these questions, each story explores such topics and allows readers to draw conclusions (or not draw conclusions) for him/herself.

I really enjoyed reading Fundamental Problems because while the stories were definitely thought provoking, they weren't completely over my head and written in a totally readable language :-) (unlike the feeling I get when I try to read some sciencey article and don't understand half of the words.)  Some of the scenarios presented are definitely out there--I would even say some of the stories (especially the first one) are border line speculative sci-fi.

Each story had a completely unique plot--the story line Tobias comes up with are definitely one-of-a-kind and you won't find them anywhere else. The characters and the situation they face are engaging and kept my interest. To summarize my thoughts for Fundamental Problems: this is an awesome book to read if you like speculative fiction or reading about philosophical matters with a fictional twist. The stories are short enough so that you can finish one in about ten minutes (perfect if you have some spare time on your hands waiting for something.)
