Blog Review: Fantasy Books

Hello world! So...I'm behind on reviewing books again (what else is new!) Being slightly obsessed with Psych may or may not be the reason. (I recently got hooked onto the show, lol.)  Since I don't have a review ready yet, I thought I'll share with you some fantasy books. I've heard a lot of buzz about Throne of Glass and Game of Thrones (did you know they're actually two completely separate series?!) and decided to check these two books out.  Anyways, I've ordered Throne of Glass and can't wait to read it once the book arrives! In the meantime, here's a bunch of mini reviews for fantasy books I've read in the past :-)

Review:
I find it amazing that a 15 year old boy could pen such an amazing/intricate story. The descriptions and characters and plot are absolutely spellbinding. I'm pretty sure this book is one of the main reasons why I got hooked onto fantasy books in middle school.  I loved how Paolini could create such a rich, fantastical setting with specific customs to each region in the world of Eragon.  The characters are very realistic (at least I found Eragon and Saphira to be very realistic and engaging--I love their relationship, how Saphira in some ways is like a mentor to Eragon.)  Although the the story often deviates from the main plot line, I think that it immerses readers more into the setting by going on these "side trips."

Another timeless work of literature--The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe! I will admit I didn't enjoy the first book in the series, but the second installment really captured my mind. Who doesn't like to imagine stepping through a portal into a magical world filled with talking animals? The author's writing style is really quite distinct (I actually *hear* a British accent in my mind when I read C.S. Lewis' books.) I also found the movie version of the book to be just as enchanting. One thing that really makes this book stand out from other fantasy books is that it is literally suitable for all ages; there's no blood, guts or gore. Yet, it still interests adults and children alike!

Hmm...I openly admit it's been a good 3-4 years since I read A Wrinkle in Time. I guess I will try my best to do this book justice as I honestly don't remember much of the plot. Mostly, the *feeling* I got when reading this novel is what is best imprinted in my mind (which further supports the fact that it is crucial for good books to make readers *feel*!) I just remembered finding some of the concepts to be quite strange, though the story itself was enjoyable enough. I also remember that one of the characters really irked me for some reason...

This series was such an unexpected gem! If I had just been browsing, I don't think I would've picked this book up. However, because my sister recommended it to me, I decided to give it a go (if my sister says something is worth reading, it probably is!) I fell in love with this book, especially the character named Han Allister. He is such a character! Han seems to leap right off the page :-) The plot is so amazing as is the world building. I flew through this book in a day (it's quite a hefty book too.) I rank this book right up there with Legend, which is saying a lot.  Speaking of which, I need to reread this book sometime (after I finish my current one, of course!)

Well, I could go on forever about other fantasy books (Fairest, The Golden Compass, Inkheart, Dragon Slippers, Redwall, Graceling, Magyk just to name a few.)  But I think I'm going to call it quits for the night.

Happy Readings!
